SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS: 8/31/08

1) Forrest is just about healed enough to start kicking Ruthie in the shin again.  She's feeling so good that she's liable to kick back now though.

2)  Randy Fisher's memorial train is canceled but will take place next spring.  Date to be announced when Tracy and I set it up.

3)  Beavers are still at it.  We've tried to take care of the problem but it looks like we may have to call in the big guns.

4) The north switch in Lake Placid has been tweaked and repaired and now works better than ever (thanks to advice from Track God Wally Van Pelt).  Billy, Jill, and I all set out one night to take care of it to save Wally a trip north and were completely successful.  Glad to help, Wally.  I learned something new too.

5) I won the lottery and will be donating 10 million dollars to the railroad tomorrow.

(HA ha.  Just kidding)  But I hear there may be some money coming our way soon.  Let's keep our fingers crossed.  BTW, if I did win the lottery, I WOULD give the railroad 10 million dollars.  So there!  HA!

(Now where would I put that money.  Let's see.  Oh yeah.   A steam locomotive for the north and south, lots of fuel for all the engines, brush cutting equipment, track tamper, tie replacer, ballast regulator, recover the seats in all the coaches, buy the property from the Historical people, put the turntable back in at Placid, a "Y" at, um, anywhere Wally needed it, huge gift shop inventory for all, rebuild the rest of the track.....)

FUN FACTS:

1) A train can carry one ton of freight 423 miles with one gallon of fuel.

2)  Trains emit 50% less greenhouse gases per passenger  mile than automobiles and only 25% as much as an airplane does in an equal distance - all while still carrying a much higher number of passengers.

3)  Trains can carry 100 times the weight of an 18 wheel truck, 4 times as many passengers as a car and 3 times as many passengers as a plane for the same gallon of fuel!
